Google Boosts 3D AI with New Startup Acquisition

Ana sayfa / News

Google is continuing its strategic investments in artificial intelligence, announcing its latest Google 3D AI acquisition. The tech giant has officially acquired Common Sense Machines, a startup specializing in converting two-dimensional images into three-dimensional digital assets using advanced AI technology. A Google spokesperson confirmed the acquisition of the Cambridge-based company, although the financial details of the deal have not yet been disclosed.

Details of the Google 3D AI Acquisition

This move is a significant part of Google’s plan to expand its generative AI capabilities. The competition in the 3D content creation space is heating up, driven by increasing demand from game developers, retailers, and augmented reality applications. With this purchase, Google aims to solidify its position in this rapidly growing market.

Common Sense Machines, with a team of approximately 12 employees, was reportedly valued at around $15 million according to LinkedIn data. The startup, founded in 2020 by a team with PhDs from MIT, had previously raised $10 million in a funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz, with other notable investors including Intel Capital and Glasswing Ventures. The company’s core technology can generate production-ready 3D models from a single image in just seconds.

Strengthening Google’s AI Portfolio

The technology developed by Common Sense Machines provides powerful tools for game developers and furniture retailers, allowing them to create digital catalogs quickly and efficiently. Co-CEO Tejas Kulkarni stated that the partnership combines the best of 3D commerce and AI innovation. Interestingly, Kulkarni previously served as a Senior Research Scientist at Google DeepMind, making this acquisition a homecoming for him.

Additionally, Google has been aggressively expanding its AI portfolio recently. The company recently partnered with the voice AI startup Hume AI and is finalizing the acquisition of cybersecurity firm Wiz for $32 billion. It also announced a massive $4.75 billion deal with clean energy developer Intersect Power to meet the energy demands of its AI infrastructure.

While Google’s Gemini AI model has made significant strides in text and image generation, its native 3D model creation abilities were still under development. The technology from Common Sense Machines is expected to fill this gap, helping Google create more immersive AI experiences. This strategy of acquiring specialized startups allows major tech firms to accelerate their development processes rather than building new capabilities from scratch.
